Czech AI + healthcare: What changes can Carebot bring?
At the beginning of the year, a Czech team presented a new study at the European Radiology Congress in Vienna, which showed that the artificial intelligence system they developed, called Carebot, was more accurate than human radiologists in detecting suspicious lesions in lung X-rays. Artificial intelligence has already surpassed humans in areas such as playing Go and analyzing large data. With the emergence of ChatGPT, OpenAI's chatbot seems to be able to answer almost any question. Now artificial intelligence has also beaten humans in another field. According to Carebot co-founder Daniel Kvak, artificial intelligence is better at identifying suspicious lesions in lung X-rays than human doctors.
Together with co-founder Matěj Misař, Kvak developed a artificial intelligence called Carebot, which has been trained on tens of thousands of anonymous images from hospitals and medical institutions around the world. It can evaluate lung X-rays with high precision and even create a brief medical report. Carebot is currently being tested by doctors at a hospital in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, and has been under testing for about half a year. Radiologist Jakub Dandár said it is already capable of handling some specific tasks. Anna Chromcová, who participated in the development of Carebot, said that if artificial intelligence is applied to clinical practice, it can help alleviate the burden on overburdened healthcare systems. As a radiologist, she said doctors are often overwhelmed by the large number of X-ray images. Carebot co-founder Matěj Misař said AI is not meant to replace doctors, but to give doctors and patients confidence that their X-ray assessments are accurate and error-free. "We improve the quality of medical examinations through continuous efforts, so that both patients and doctors know that they will always receive accurate diagnoses, whether it's in a large hospital in Prague or a small clinic at one in the morning. Because artificial intelligence doesn't get tired and doesn't need rest. Collaborating with artificial intelligence is the best solution for doctors." If Carebot obtains medical device certification by the end of this year, it will be able to be used in hospitals across Europe and around the world.A Czechoslovakian writer named Karel Capek was the first to coin the term "robot" in his stories. The word "robota" was used to describe a type of biologically-assembled cyborg slave that served humans. This word later evolved into "Robot," becoming the generic term for artificial humans and robots.
It is worth mentioning that the father of "innovation theory," Joseph Schumpeter, also hailed from Czechoslovakia. Why did this small country give birth to so many groundbreaking and influential ideas that have had a significant impact on the world?
